Investigating the Feasibility of Distributing the Divya 1.5 Manual Washing Machine in India - Findings Report

The research aimed to assess the feasibility of distributing the Divya 1.5 manual washing machine in India. Conducted by The Washing Machine Project (TWMP) and Sun King, the study gathered primary data through 29 interview surveys on laundry habits and preferences. Sun King, known for improving electricity access in Africa and Asia via solar energy, surveyed participants from various Indian cities, including Danapur (26%), Hyderabad (15%), Hajipur (15%), and Lucknow (15%), in March 2022.

Pondicherry Pilot Baseline Report

In India, following the initial distribution of one test washing machine, TWMP has implemented a pilot programme for washing machines by distributing 9 more units to households situated in Kuilapalayam and Edayanchavadi. The washing machines were distributed in March 2024. As part of the implementation of this pilot programme, TWMP conducted a baseline assessment by surveying each of the households that received a washing machine to understand the laundry practices of these households before receiving the washing machine. The main objective of this report is to present the findings of this baseline assessment.

Pondicherry Pilot Midline Report

In India, following the initial distribution of one test washing machine, TWMP has implemented a pilot programme for washing machines by distributing 9 more units to households situated in Pondicherry. The washing machines were distributed in March 2024. As part of the implementation of this pilot programme, TWMP conducted a midline assessment by surveying each of the households that received a washing machine to understand their current washing practices with the washing machine. The main objective of this report is to present an overview of the findings of this midline assessment
