Uganda May/June 2023
The Washing Machine Project (TWMP) conducted extensive user testing in Uganda between May and June 2023, engaging with diverse communities, including urban households, refugee settlements, and disability support centres. Key partnerships were strengthened with TASS, which facilitated access to Kyangwali refugee settlement, and InPact, which supported testing with lower-income families. The team met with various stakeholders, including UNHCR, Oxfam, and local water officials, all of whom expressed interest in integrating the washing machines into their operations. Machines were left with select users for ongoing feedback, with findings highlighting the need for improved wash cycle instructions, increased machine size for commercial use, and better access to liquid or powder soap. A monitoring and evaluation plan was established for the next six months, ensuring continued support and design refinements based on user insights.

Uganda 6-month Follow up Survey Brief
The 6-month follow-up assessment of The Washing Machine Project’s pilot in Uganda found high user satisfaction, with significant savings in time, water, and costs. Users reported reduced physical and psychological strain, though some preferred handwashing bulky items like blankets and sweaters. Feedback on the washing machine’s design was largely positive, with minor challenges in transport due to small wheels. Maintenance needs were minimal, with no reported repairs required.

Kampala 2024 Baseline Report
In Uganda, following the initial distribution of two test washing machines into a household and a community centre, TWMP has implemented a programme focussed on the distribution of 16 more washing machines in and around Kampala both in community settings as well as individual households. The washing machines were distributed in March 2024. As part of the implementation of this programme, TWMP conducted a baseline assessment by surveying users who received a washing machine to understand their washing practices before receiving the washing machine. The main objective of this report is to present the findings of this baseline assessment.
Kampala 2024 Midline Report 2
In Uganda, TWMP has implemented a programme focused on the distribution of 16 washing machines in and around Kampala, both in community settings and individual households. The washing machines were distributed in March 2024. As part of the implementation of this programme, TWMP conducted a second midline assessment by surveying 36 users who received a washing machine to understand their current washing practices with the washing machine.
